Self-reflection, a deep understanding of self, knowledge of what is proper and a genuine desire to transform are all prerequisites to breaking with bad habits.
First, we need to know what is not proper, and then we need to break with habits that are not proper.
My own self-discovery is that discipline alone could not get me to break with habits. Also, my proactive lifestyle was not enough. But with a burning YES, a higher purpose to start with a more appropriate habit, it was easy.
Learning is a key to change. If we are ignorant in something, then how and why would we change a habit?
My own example. Until recently I ate slabs of chocolate, a jar of honey a week, large amounts of fruit and carbohydrates, believing that it was healthy. With no personal weight issues or medication needs there was “no” reason to think otherwise.
Then having learned of the impacts of sugar on our wellbeing, I stopped my sugar intake immediately. From an abundance of sugar to zero sugar was an easy habit change, not because of discipline alone, but a higher purpose.
