Testosterone or oestrogen impacts, or maybe wisdom, our biases change as we age. We start off like a bull in a china shop, competing to gain our independence physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. As we progress down the Maturity Continuum, we learn that life is by nature, highly interdependent. We get to understand the value of cooperation over competition.
Growing older, we rely more on discipline than motivation to perform at a high level. Physical recovery becomes slower and we likely to have more niggling injuries. If we relied on motivation alone, we would be skipping days and activities in moments that we did not feel good.
Everyone has off days, but with age our off days tend to shift up a gear. Champions understand that they must practice even on their off days to win; it is a discipline on those off days that set them apart. When the going gets tough, the tough get going.
When we are younger, we tend to focus on intensity rather than consistency. We recover more quickly from highly intensive activity, and we keep our resilience through skipped days. As we get older, we need to put consistency before intensity because we cannot afford to be skipping days.
With increased wisdom we start managing ourselves rather than time. The sooner we make this transition the more energy we carry into the golden autumn years. These transitions seem to be easier made by those who lived the benefits of routine. Routine does not mean boring, but it is a useful tool in keeping us on a proper trajectory.
Some individuals are never satisfied, others are more content. I am not convinced that these biases are influenced with age. I still live my life more in the camp of never satisfied; my fulfilment lies in having proper motives and intrinsic security in my principles and values.
We all feel satisfied when we realize our expectations. We each set our own expectations. If we have high expectations, then irrespective of age, we better be proactive and do the stuff that matters to achieve them and so be fulfilled. Of course, our expectations shift over time, but this does not have to mean something less, just changed.
