I encourage the benefits of proactive behaviour; doing stuff that matters before it becomes urgent. Even so, we will make mistakes and learn from them.
Not only accepting that I will make mistakes, but I also now embrace hurdles and obstacles as necessary learning opportunities. This changed mindset and committed approach ensures that when I am negatively impacted by events (we are all human), I quickly recover to face the reality and deal with it.
Some business experiences that I have learned from.
In large multinational corporates, there is enough diverse talent to have associates do the stuff that they like doing. They deliver. I would never bog an associate down in an area of work that he disliked doing. There were others motivated in such areas.
In small business, high performance associates are limited. Let’s not be naïve, why would a high performer work for someone else in a small company with limited career opportunities? In small business I have realised that I need to do the stuff that others do not like doing, even if I don’t like doing it myself.
Working for yourself is a chance to live out your own dreams rather than live out someone else’s dream. But this is a domain only for persons with a high tolerance for risk and adversity; and those prepared to sacrifice short term reward for long term value.
Another unspoken realisation of running your own business. In large corporations you mostly interact with others in your social network on a friendly basis. In your own business, when money is involved, you get to discover the true characteristics of persons that you thought you knew before. Warning, you will discover “past friends” who are Win/lose. Consider it a privilege of starting your own business to know people better, to know who genuinely acts out Win/win.
Real friends will support your business, pay the full price, and pay on time. Others will expect special pricing, and likely pay late. Real friends will help you win, remember that!
