Look in the mirror and stop blaming!

It has been a while since I last wrote a post. Sometimes, like in this moment, frustrations get me to write, not with the purpose for others to read, but my own articulation of thoughts.

Difficult times and challenges reveal an awful lot about people, and likely their part in either success or failure that follows.

The main theme that I notice in failure is that persons blame everyone else rather than taking responsibility themselves for their part.

An example in politics. I am South African. During the first 5 years of ANC rule there was no blaming of colonialism. The economy was flourishing. In the last 20 years, with corruption, nepotism and incompetence ablaze, and the economy faltering, the rhetoric of blaming colonialism is ever louder and escalating.

Business is not dissimilar. I was part of a successful team and multinational business until 9 years ago when sold. Today with closure of plants, those in charge start blaming and looking for excuses in decisions and events of a decade prior.

It is obvious, the phenomena of blaming others has nothing to do with race, but everything to do with character, a trait that the problem is always on the outside.

Self-reflection is the start of every journey of continuous improvement. I am often left to ponder whether those blaming everything bar themselves self-reflect or not, and if they did, what mechanisms they employ in denial. And whether that denial is believed or a subconscious defensive mechanism.
